Sidney Poitier’s timeless performance in Lilies of the Field ensured his position as a Hollywood legend, making him the first black actor to ever win an Oscar. His career as a respected actor would continue for the next 50 years. However, Sidney chose to go on retirement from Hollywood in order to serve his native Bahamas as ambassador to Japan and UNESCO, which just added to his already high degree of respectability and acclaim.
