45 Photos Telling The Full Story Of The Miraculous Andes Tragedy

Frozen All The Way

The survivors were freezing in the harsh environment. Typically, the average temperature around October hovers near a comfortable 20 degrees Celsius in Uruguay. However, they found themselves atop a peak where the temperature plummeted to minus 30 degrees Celsius during the night. This was a drastic 50-degree temperature shift that their bodies had to rapidly adjust to.

To combat the freezing conditions, they used the aircraft wreckage seat covers for warmth. They would huddle together at night to share and preserve their body heat. Their survival instincts were on high alert, pushed to the absolute limits. Fortunately, they found food to sustain themselves, a small mercy in an unforgiving landscape.
