At one juncture, Canessa and Parrado reached a valley in the mountains. Parrado identified the locale, having seen it from the mountain peak. Here, a river originated, and they decided to follow its course. It took them an arduous ten days to arrive when they were merely ten hours away from the aircraft by direct route.

Gradually, signs of human presence emerged, from camping remnants to cattle sightings on the ninth day. Overwhelmed with exhaustion, they sought refuge in sleep. The dawn of the following day revealed horse riders on the opposite bank of the river, signaling the much-awaited beacon of human contact.
