Offering Support To Their Savior

The Andes tragedy survivors always kept in touch with the Chilean muleteer, Catalán, who found and accompanied them throughout their ordeal. In 2007, they learned that he needed hip replacement surgery. Canessa, who became a cardiologist, and other survivors gathered the funds to cover the operation.

They all demonstrated gratitude and care toward their rescuer by coming together and helping him in his time of need. And so, it was a profound loss when Catalán died on February 11, 2020, at 91, in his native Chile. The enduring friendship and support between the survivors and their savior highlight that a profound bond can be forged from such catastrophic events.
