45 Photos Telling The Full Story Of The Miraculous Andes Tragedy

What Caused The Accident?

The plane’s pilot and co-pilot were uncertain about their location while flying over the mountains. They requested permission from the airport control tower to commence descent. They were granted authorization, unfortunately, without proper verification that the aircraft was still over the Andes range. This was a grave oversight, as the appropriate response should have been to deny the request.

Some passengers reported seeing the mountain looming dangerously close to the aircraft during the descent. This foreboding sight culminated in the plane’s collision with the mountain. The crash occurred on a glacier that has since been named the “Valley of Tears” in Argentina, just 1,200 meters away from the Chilean border.
