A Museum For The Miraculous Tragedy

In the Ciudad Vieja neighborhood of Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, a museum is dedicated to the survivors and victims of the Andes plane crash. Both survivors and those who didn’t make it share their stories there, attracting many tourists. The Andes Museum 1972 was founded, curated, and directed by Jörg Thomsen, who believes in preserving their memory, stating, “Only those who are forgotten truly die.”

Museums dedicated to plane crashes are not uncommon worldwide, serving as places of remembrance, education, and reflection. And this one commemorates the tragedy and miracle of the Andes, drawing 98% of its visitors from foreign countries who want to learn about it.
