Musical Marketing: A Dress That Sang A Sales Pitch At The VMAs!

Singer Macy Gray set the 2001 MTV VMAs abuzz with her creative marketing strategy. Using her time in the spotlight to plug her upcoming album, Gray donned a striking pink and purple dress that was more billboard than ballgown. Emblazoned on the front, in bold lettering, were the words “My New Album Drops Sept. 18, 2001.”

If that wasn’t eye-catching enough, the back of the dress carried a cheeky message on her rear: “Buy It!” Macy’s walking advertisement was an innovative, if not audacious, promotional tactic that left everyone talking. Some said that it was tacky, but if this stunt sold more albums for her, then the idea worked!
