James Avery, who played the beloved role of Uncle Phil in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, died in 2013 of complications from an open heart surgery. He battled heart disease for many years before passing away. He served in the US Navy in Vietnam and wrote scripts and poetry for PBS before his acting career took off.
