Ray indelibly shaped McDonald’s into a fast-food juggernaut, but his version of the brand’s history often minimized the McDonald brothers’ contributions. Most glaringly, his 1970s autobiography, “Grinding It Out: The Making of McDonald’s,” claimed he was the “founder,” dating the company’s birth to his first Illinois location.

Ronald, a nephew of the brothers, criticized Kroc’s self-aggrandizement, stating, “It was all ego. Why else would you put a bust of yourself in every store? Why would you put your name on the placemats?” He questions if there was any American corporation where an employee became the founder.
