During the Montana gold rush, Helena had the most billionaires per capita of any city in the world. Almost 50 of them resided there by 1888, and it is estimated that $3.6 billion worth of gold was extracted from Last Chance Gulch during a twenty-year period. The picturesque Victorian architecture resulted from the city’s riches being concentrated in one area.
