Named for General Richard Montgomery, Montgomery became Alabama’s capital in 1846 and is located beside the Alabama River. The city is a significant contributor to the state’s economy, with livestock and dairy products some of the primary producers. Apart from that, Montgomery has a thriving industry that includes poultry and beef processing, the manufacture of wood products, water heaters, plastics, aircraft parts, and textiles.
