Large Retailers Which Have Filed For Bankruptcy

Southeastern Grocers

Southeastern Grocers is the supermarket conglomerate whose subsidiaries include household names like Winn-Dixie, Bi-Lo, and Harvey Supermarkets. It was founded just 7 years ago in 2011 in Jacksonville, Florida. It first filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009, but was able to secure a loan for $100 million, helping it re-emerge from bankruptcy protection in 2010.

Unfortunately, its financial troubles continued and it filed for bankruptcy again in March 2018 with plans to reduce its debt by $500 million. The company was able to exceed that goal and decrease their debt by $600 million, and they were able to get out of bankruptcy for the second time in June. Unfortunately, they’ve also had to close almost 100 stores along the way.
