In 1956, Ray founded the Franchise Realty Corporation, a subsidiary designed to buy or lease land where McDonald’s franchises would be built. Instead of merely profiting from food sales, McDonald’s would also collect a monthly land rental fee from franchisees or a percentage of their sales, whichever was higher. This pivot greatly padded Ray’s earnings.
