The Brothers’ Hometown Gets Its First McDonald’s, But…

The McDonald brothers left their home in New Hampshire for California in the 1920s, as they harbored grand dreams that didn’t initially involve burgers and fries. But life comes full circle. Their brand eventually expanded to 600 locations, including a poignant one: McDonald’s 594th restaurant in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Opened in 1964, three years after selling to Ray, this particular restaurant was only a stone’s throw away from Maurice and Richard’s childhood home. Adding salt to the wound, Richard had to stand in line and pay for his meal when he visited. It was a bittersweet homecoming, a success story not entirely theirs anymore.
