Richard and Maurice initially headed to California with Hollywood dreams. Landing menial jobs at Columbia Movie Studios, they toiled on silent film sets for a meager $25 a week—hardly the path to millionaire status they’d envisioned. But timing is everything: the 1930 opening coincided with the Great Depression. Bills piled up; they even buried silver in their backyard as a financial failsafe against foreclosure. After seven years of financial struggles, they sold the Beacon and pivoted—this time to food.
