Inheriting a culinary legacy from their family’s patriarch, Patrick—who once ran a food stand called The Airdrome—Richard, and Maurice opened their first quasi-official restaurant in San Bernardino in 1940, carrying their family name. Dubbed “McDonald’s Famous Barbecue,” it initially only focused on traditional barbecue offerings.

The brothers weren’t novices in the food business; they had previously operated a hot dog stand.
