In the early 1950s, the McDonald brothers saw growth and transformation opportunities. Collaborating with architect Stanley Clark Meston, they moved to a new building and conceived the iconic “Golden Arches” design. This move was more than just a business expansion; it was a new era for McDonald’s.

Working meticulously through the unique technical elements that would make McDonald’s distinct, the brothers began franchising. Their first franchise outpost opened in Phoenix, Arizona, at the corner of Central Avenue and Indian School Road. The second, located at 10207 Lakewood Boulevard in Downey, California, is the oldest surviving McDonald’s.
