The rue21 brand has been an established institution for almost 50 years. Founded in 1970, its main target was the teens to young adult demographic to whom they sold predominantly casual apparel and accessories. This proved to be successful for a time until they filed for bankruptcy protection in 2002. After a drastic reorganization, they were able to exit bankruptcy a year later.
They even had massive plans of expanding over the next 5 years at that time, even doubling the size of their West Virginia distribution center in 2012. Unfortunately, rue21 fell victim to the retail apocalypse and had to file for bankruptcy again on April 2017. However, they were able to emerge from that just 4 months later after debt consolidation and restructuring.
