Large Retailers Which Have Filed For Bankruptcy

Sports Authority

For almost 90 years, Sports Authority dominated the sports retail space. Founded in 1928, it was formerly known as Gart Sports and was later rebranded to Sports Authority in 1987. In its heyday, Sports Authority had 460 stores across the United States and Puerto Rico. It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March 2016, closing 140 stores in the process. After holding out for a buyer in hopes of keeping the brand and business alive, they succumbed to converting it to Chapter 7 bankruptcy with all of its stores closed and assets liquidated. By July 2016, their website redirected to their main rival’s website, Dick’s Sporting Goods.
