Founded in San Francisco in 1976, Gymboree has been the foremost name in children’s apparel for decades, so it’s quite a shock to find out that it’s a company in financial peril.
The Gymboree Group company also previously owned a chain of Play & Music Centers where parents could drop off their preschool-aged kids for child care, but this branch of the company was sold off to a private investor in 2016. In 2010, Gymboree Group was acquired by Bain Capital. However, it soon filed for bankruptcy in 2017. Thankfully, the original owners reacquired the brand and it re-emerged from bankruptcy the following September.
